Christian Education | Confirmation

Catechism, or instruction in the faith, is a very important part of the young Christian’s life as it helps the person grow in faith and become a better informed Christian, equipped to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with family, friends, and neighbors. It is intended that the student emerges from his or her instruction as a more aware, responsible, and active Christian in today’s world.

Each candidate for confirmation is provided with study sessions, worship experiences, observations of the inner workings of the church, and church/community service projects to enable him/her to meet the above-mentioned goals of the program. It is deemed to be necessary that two academic years of training and instruction be given so that the student may responsibly affirm his or her baptism and be confirmed.

As a confirmed member of St. John’s, the former catechumen will assume greater privilege and responsibility in the church. He/she will have voting privileges at congregational meetings, will be eligible to serve on council and committees in the church, will be qualified to preach on Youth Sundays or to lay read on any given Sunday, and will be expected to support St. John’s and the wider church through the responsible stewardship of time, talents and possessions.
